Watch anatomy of a woodcut video:
I had no idea when I started out working in trades as a teenager that I would end up making woodcuts.
Years ago, I used to come home at the end of the day, clothes and hair full of dust, covered in paint and dirt, muscles properly sore after having spent the day remodeling a living room or fixing up someone's deck -- creating something that would bring more joy and beauty into someone's life.
The other evening, I was leaving the studio after finishing up some custom framed art for Mezari Atelier, one of my beloved stockists and all-time favourite boutiques in Montréal. I looked down at my hands and realized -- there I was, at the end of the day, clothes and hair full of dust, covered in paint and dirt, muscles properly sore after having spent the day creating something that will bring more joy and beauty into someone's life.
Who knew that learning how to use hand tools would end up being so useful?
I'm BEYOND excited to share this special look behind the scenes with you. If you've ever wondered exactly how woodcuts are made, how a vintage printing press works, or how many hand-carved luna moths can fit on a 25x34-inch woodblock, look no further.
Or maybe you've never wondered any of these things and just need something satisfying to watch while you wait for your spaghetti to cook. Either way this video has got you covered!
It's a true honour to share this process with you, and I hope you enjoy this video enormously.
Extra special thanks to the amazing people who brought this project to life: Joanna Long, Aidan Vickery, Mélodie Cardin Feuerstack, Xarah Dion, Sarvenaz Amir-Ebrahimi and too many others to name! You know who you are.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being here.
